Fire instructors are well trained to provide traditional face-to-face
classroom instruction. The fire instructors are not trained to create
motivating e-class training. Simply moving the lesson plan and slides for
face-to-face training online does not engage the learner and ensure
effective transfer of knowledge. There are no education or training
programs that provide the tools needed by the fire instructors to transition
training from a face-to-face format to an online format.
The two formats, classroom and e-class have similarities. The same
principles of training are used. The instructor has to motivate the learner,
keep her attention and engage her in the training as well as assessing
knowledge transfer and providing feedback.
The difference between the two is that the instructor is not available in
person to see the learner’s expressions and follow the cues to elaborate or
to speed up the presentation and answer questions. The motivation,
engagement, assessment, and communication have to be accomplished in
other ways. It is these differences that this course will focus on and give
you, the fire instructor, skills to prepare effective e-classes.
The choice of formats for this class was intentionally made to provide
experience taking a course in an online format. This experience will expose
weaknesses and strengths in e-class design. The lessons learned will help
in creating better e-classes.
This e-class is divided into eight modules. The e-class begins with an
introduction to the material to be covered. The next three modules discuss
adult learning characteristics, e-class design, and copyright issues related
to the Internet.
The heart of the e-class is using authoring software to develop an e-class.
This material is presented in modules five and six. Module five is a
demonstration of the authoring software. An opportunity to use the
software is provided in module six.
The last two modules are an assessment to reinforce the material
presented and the e-class wraps up with a review.
There are no regular class meetings. Learners are invited to contact me
with questions or issues about the material. The e-class is self-paced over
a 60 day period.
Upon completion of this course you will know the characteristics of the
adult learner and how to develop an e-class with them in mind, how to
avoid copyright infringement when selecting media for e-classes, and how
to use authoring software to create an e-class.
The e-class can also be used as a reference when designing future e-
classes. There is a downloadable job aid that can be used to assist in
future e-class development.
Quiz items appear throughout the e-class. The quizzes consist of multiple
choice and true/false items and mouse clicks during the demonstration
module. The project module is scored using a rubric. A passing score is
75%. You may retake individual modules as often as needed to pass.

The technical requirements required for success are a computer with a
keyboard and a mouse, an Internet connection, the Adobe Reader and
Adobe Flash Player programs installed, and the authoring program
specified by the course.

This e-class is self-paced and must be completed within 60 days of start.
This e-class will require approximately one hour to complete the modules
and approximately two hours to complete the project.
Your performance in the course is evaluated by the assessments. There
are eight modules. Five modules are graded. Four modules are
assessments with a mix of multiple choice, true or false items, and mouse
clicks during a demonstration. The project is graded based on a rubric.
An overall score of 75% or better is passing. Grade feedback is provided
at the end of each quiz session.
If you do not agree with a grade on any assignment, activity, or others, it is
your responsibility to appeal the grade to the instructor within one week
after the grade is posted.
Unauthorized duplication of copyrighted material is subject to appropriate
disciplinary actions as well as those civil remedies and criminal penalties
provided by federal law.
Students who engage in scholastic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary
penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course. Scholastic
dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, or
submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole
or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person,
any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student, or the attempt to
commit such acts.
Students are expected to be diligent in their studies and attend class
regularly and on time. Students are responsible for all class work and
assignments. On recommendation of the instructor concerned and with the
approval of the director, students may, at any time, be dropped from
Emergency Continuity Plan:
This distance education class is facilitated via an online server. This allows
instructors and learners to continue their teaching and learning whether or
not there is a natural disaster.
Should a disaster occur, announcements will be made via email. To
facilitate the completion of classes, most or all of the communication
between students and the institution, the instructor, and fellow classmates
will take place using email and the server.
To receive credit for a course, it is the student's responsibility to complete
all the requirements for that course. Failure to access course materials
once reasonably possible can result in a reduction of the overall grade in
